Smile When You Think You Can

I think we’ve all done this at least once. If not yet, believe me, you will. You are in the car, hear a song for the first time, and know you have to jot that song down because it instantly became one of your favorites.

And, if you are like me, want to check it out on your phone or on your computer as soon as you get home. But, you don’t trust yourself to remember what you think would be the title. You then look for something close by in the car to jot whatever words down you think you should. Loose paper around?

Darn it! No paper !

If you’re like me, you then pop open your purse, reminding yourself to drive safely, grab a pen, assuming something could be found to write on. But, of course, it’s the one time there is no receipt or an old grocery list.

But wait. You finally find hope !

A teeny tiny something tucked inside your purse you can write on. Wooo Hooo !

You then would be, like myself, determined to make that tiny something and pen become friends. Why did I go that extra mile to jot this down? If you know me, you’d know why. But if you don’t, then I’ll give you a clue – the title of this song.

I’ve sure lost my way a few times. I’ve sure lost my cool more than a few times. Lost my mind? You bet I have, literally, with my illness I was hit with years ago. If you’ve been hit with a few tough ordeals, or maybe it’s just that your normal days are harder that you’d like, then listen.

Yes, happiness is wonderful, but it doesn’t stick around as much as we’d like.
Yes, sunshine is sure nice to have around, but we all know that soon we’ll see the clouds. Let me pass a few facts about a smile that might help you see through those clouds.

Smiling is a funny thing. Not only do we smile because we’re happy, but the act of smiling itself can make us happy. When we smile, we activate certain muscles, which send a message to the brain, telling it, “We’re smiling,” and the brain, in response, thinks, “I guess I must be happy.”

Another reason to smile is that according to various studies, smiling is considered contagious. Smiling activates the release of neuropeptides, neurotransmitters dopamine, endorphins and serotonin, (interesting words, don’t you think?) which decrease stress levels, relax the body, lower heart rate and blood pressure, and serve as an antidepressant/mood lifter.

If you are like me, then you don’t really need these type reasons to smile.
If you are like me, then you remember that God knows what He’s doing and His plans for you are perfect. And, if you know me, then you know my theme I live by – Smile.

  1. I agree. Smiling makes such a difference in your day.

    I must admit, I’m not so good at keeping that smiling face on at home, but I try. I especially try to smile when I leave the house to run errands. I want to be the customer/client who brings cheerfulness to someone’s day. It matters.

    1. The smile inside is more important. Some days mine sure is hiding. That’s when I try to notice little things I see around me I’m thankful for. Then I think ‘ya know what… I have it made compared to so many.’ then a smile begins to grow just a weee bit. 🙂
